Chapter 11: Daylight
Morning came up gold over the Cinder March, and Rina woke alone.
The bed was warm where he had been.
She found him on the balcony in shirtsleeves, his silver hair lit, looking down into the courtyard.
She walked out in his black coat with nothing under it.
The sun hit her bare legs and the silver crescent on her shoulder, and it flared bright.
Kaldrith turned.
His amber eyes went from her face to the crescent to the open collar of the coat, and something in them went dark and hungry.
"Good morning," Rina said.
"You should not be out here."
"Why not?"
"The Crown Prince's guards are on the east wall."
"Let them look."
She crossed to him.
The balcony was a wide stone shelf over the courtyard, with a parapet as high as her hip and broad enough to sit on.
She hopped up onto it.
The stone was warm under her thighs.
She felt the coat slide open and the cool air on her skin, and she saw him see it.
"You are going to be the death of me," he said.
"Not for eighty days."
It was meant as a joke.
It landed wrong, and she saw him flinch.
