Chapter 14: The Spring Below
The spring cave was warm enough that she left the towel on the rock.
Steam rolled off the black water in slow curls.
The ember lamps in the ceiling cast a low orange light that turned every drop on her skin to a spark.
Rina sat on the flat ledge at the pool's edge with her feet in the water and her knees apart.
Kaldrith knelt in the shallows in front of her, water to his ribs, his silver hair loose and floating around his shoulders.
He had not touched her yet.
In the doorway he had asked if he might come down to the water with her tonight.
He had said he would do nothing but what she wanted.
She had said yes.
She had meant it with her whole body.
Now she leaned back on her hands and looked down at him through the steam.
"You're allowed to start," she said.
"I want to do it properly."
"You always do."
"Not like this." His hands rose out of the water and closed around her ankles, so slowly. "Rina. I would like to take my time."
"Then take it."
He kissed the top of her left foot.
It was such a small, absurd thing that she laughed, and then the laugh caught in her throat, because he kissed her ankle next.
The inside of her calf, and the soft hollow behind her knee.
His mouth was hot and wet from the steam.
He worked his way up her leg without hurry, one kiss at a time.
Every one of them lit a small slow fire under her skin.
She was trembling by the time he reached her thigh.
"Kaldrith."
"Yes?"
"You're doing that on purpose."
"I am." He pressed a kiss to the inside of her thigh, an inch from where she wanted him. "I like how you sound."
"How do I sound?"
"Like you cannot decide whether to laugh or beg."
"I'm not going to beg."
He looked up.
His eyes were gold in the lamplight, and his smile was small and wicked and a little shy.
"I would not mind if you did," he said.
She made a sound that was not either one.
