Chapter 23: A Name
The border gate of the Cinder March was forty feet of black iron, and it was closed.
Rina stood in front of it in the falling snow with her hood back and her breath smoking.
Kaldrith stood at her left.
Behind them the road ran back toward Aurelan City, empty and white, and Lysander's honor guard had halted a respectful distance away.
On the wall above, silhouetted against a grey sky, were the people of the March.
Hundreds of them.
Demon men and women in black wool and ember-orange scarves stood shoulder to shoulder along the parapet.
Their horns were every length, bronze and iron and ash-white, and they made no sound.
Rina looked up at them.
None of them looked afraid.
They looked like people who had been hurt a long time ago and had no intention of being hurt again.
"They do not know what to call you," Kaldrith said, quietly.
"I know."
"They say Bride, or Lady, or the human. The old women say the nameless one."
"That's what the court called me."
"Yes."
"I'd like to change that."
She turned to him.
The snow had caught in his silver hair and on his horns.
The ring was gone from his chest, and without it his coat sat open at the throat.
She could see the small pale dots on his skin, quiet as a scar.
"Would you give me a name?" she said.
His face changed.
"Mine is Rina."
"I like it."
"But I wore a name that wasn't mine for ninety days, and I answered to Lady Wynne in front of a court."
