Chapter 19: The Sentence
"Then do it," I said.
He looked at me.
"You don't understand what I'm asking."
"I've read the sentence. I know it better than you do."
"Vivi."
"If you don't, he waits. And one day you go near a pond, or a stair, or a cup, and I'm not there to see it."
He held my hand against his mouth for a long moment.
He didn't kiss it.
He just held it there, breathing.
"I'll be in that cathedral," he said against my fingers. "Whatever happens, I'll be there before you are."
Then he picked up his lantern and went down the hundred and eighty steps.
He didn't come back the next night, or the one after.
On the fourth morning, the captain came up with four guards and took me down to the great hall.
They'd given me a plain grey dress.
My hair was down because nobody had brought pins.
The hall was fuller than the night of the banquet.
Every lord, every lady, every servant who could find a gap in the doors was there.
A path opened in front of me as I walked.
