I didn't touch it.

I stood on the landing in the white shift and looked down at my own knife on its square of grey cloth.

Someone had polished it.

The hawk on the handle shone in the torchlight.

I stepped over it.

The stone was freezing under my bare feet.

I went down all hundred and eighty steps with one hand on the wall.

At the bottom, the tower door stood open to the night.

A guard sat on a barrel beside it with his back turned, whittling a stick.

He didn't look up as I passed.

He'd been paid not to.

I crossed the dark yard in the shadow of the wall.

Nobody stopped me.

Nobody stopped me at the garden gate, or the west arch, or the long colonnade.

Every door in the palace had been opened for the villainess.

I knew where they wanted me to go.

I went there.

The cathedral stood at the end of the great square, white stone with two tall towers and a flight of wide steps.
