Chapter 39: Six Hundred
The ambulance was gone by the time I got to Taylor Street.
The stairs smelled like starch.
The door at the top was standing open. The frame was split down the side where the lock had been.
Inside, the couch was slashed open. The kitchen drawers were dumped on the floor.
Two halves of a wooden cane lay by the radiator.
Her sewing machine was on its side on the linoleum.
On the table, under a coffee mug, was a note in black marker.
Welcome home. 600.
I read it twice.
Then I set the machine upright.
The presser foot was bent. I straightened it with my thumbs, slowly, until it sat square.
I opened the refrigerator.
There was a jar of mustard, two eggs, and half a loaf of bread in its bag.
One plate in the dish drainer. One mug.
Two people had been living on that.
In the corner of the bedroom there was a cardboard box taped shut, with MOM written on the side in her handwriting.
They'd kicked it over. Nobody had opened it.
I didn't open it either.
I set it right side up against the wall.
I put the two halves of the cane on top of it.
