Chapter 49: Sunday Lunch
"Rita?"
She bent down and worked the shears out of the floorboards.
"Sorry. They slipped."
"You've never dropped shears in your life."
She laughed, too fast, and smoothed the green crepe flat with both hands.
"Nonno doesn't have people to the house. That's all. Not since my brother got hurt."
I'd known Rita a year.
I knew she had a brother who didn't go out. She'd said it once, the way you'd say it was raining.
"He invited the baby," I said. "That's nice, isn't it?"
"It's nice," Rita said, and went back to cutting.
She didn't look up again until lunch.
Sunday at one we drove out to Elmwood Park in Pasquale's Buick.
No cousins. Augusto's card had said bring your husband and bring the baby. It hadn't said bring men.
Damiano drove. He hadn't said much since Friday.
The house was a brick bungalow on a quiet street, with an awning over the porch and tomatoes in the side yard, growing in rows of old coffee cans painted green.
Augusto came down the steps in his shirtsleeves and a cardigan, with dirt on his knees.
He kissed me on both cheeks and shook Damiano's hand.
Then he held out his arms for Maddie, and I let him take her.
