"Damiano."
He sat down on the fitting platform in front of the window, with the T-shirt still in his hands.
He sat the way he had on the shoe crates the night I sewed his seam.
A man waiting for a needle.
"One of the men from your father's stairs," he said, "was Augusto Bellanca's grandson."
He was looking at the trousers on the form, not at me.
I sat down on the edge of the cutting table.
"He was twenty-three. Three years older than Rita is now. Gold chain, a Cubs hat on backward. He laughed when I walked into that garage."
The shop was very quiet.
Outside, a bus went by on Taylor Street and the window hummed.
"I broke his knees," he said. "Both of them. With a length of pipe from the floor of that garage."
"With your right hand."
He looked down at it.
"With my right hand."
