I wore the red dress to 26th and California.
The one from the show. I'd let it out two inches after Maddie, at midnight, with the shop lights off.
Damiano zipped me into it in our bedroom at seven in the morning.
"You don't have to do this," he said into my hair.
"I said it in a jail. With other people listening."
"So did she. She said a lot of things."
"I'm not her."
He did up the hook at the top of the zipper.
"Somebody has to push the stroller," he said. "Go."
Dad came with me. He wore his good flannel and his tie from my wedding, and he wouldn't say why.
The cousins drove us down California Avenue and parked in the lot with the bail bondsmen's signs.
The courtroom was on the fifth floor. Wood paneling, bad light, a flag that needed washing.
I walked down the aisle and sat in the front row, right behind the rail.
Dad sat by me with his cane between his knees.
Serena came in through the side door with a deputy at her elbow.
