Chapter 62: Found Family
I took the suitcase out of her hand.
The broken wheel scraped on the step.
"Then you chose," I said. "Come in."
She came in and stood in the middle of my shop with the garbage bag against her legs.
"I didn't choose you over him," she said. "I want you to know that. I'm not taking sides."
"Okay."
"I just couldn't sit at his table and pass the bread anymore."
"Okay."
She started to cry again, furious about it.
"Stop saying okay."
The stairs at the back creaked.
Dad came down in his robe and his slippers, one step and the cane, one step and the cane.
He looked at the suitcase. He looked at the garbage bag. He looked at Rita.
"You're the cutter," he said.
"Yes, Mr. Morelli."
"You eat eggs?"
"Everybody eats eggs," Dad said, before she could answer. "Come upstairs. The room in the back's empty."
The room in the back had been mine, once, the night before my wedding.
It was small and clean, with a window over the alley and a bed the foreman had carried up.
It didn't have a door. Only a curtain on a rod.
Rita stood in the doorway with her suitcase and looked at the curtain.
"I'm sorry," I said. "We'll fix it."
