Chapter 64: The Yard at Night
I called the man from the waiting room from the top of the stairs.
"The yard," I said. "Now. Bring the cousins."
"I'm outside your door, Donna."
He was. He'd been parked down the block since six, because nobody had told him to go home.
I looked at my sewing basket on the floor by the drafting table.
I left it where it was and went empty-handed.
The man from the waiting room drove south on Halsted.
The cousins were behind us, close enough that I could see the bakery bag on their dashboard.
The gate at the yard was open.
Outside it, on the gravel shoulder, a long dark car sat with its engine running and its lights off.
The back window was down an inch.
We pulled in past it.
The yard light by the river was on, the one on the tall pole, and it made a circle of white on the gravel.
Four young men in dark jackets stood in the circle.
One of them was holding a length of pipe, loosely, down by his leg.
In the middle of them was the crane boom, lying on its side by the water, where it had lain since my father's company died.
