Chapter 71: The Footing
The lot on Loomis Street was two blocks from the brick house.
It sat between a laundromat and a yellow brick two-flat with a Virgin Mary in the yard.
For a year it had been weeds and a chain-link fence.
Now it was a hole in the ground with a shape in it.
The trenches for the footings ran around the edge of the lot and across the middle.
They were two feet wide, lined with plywood forms, with rebar tied in a grid.
Damiano had drawn every inch of it.
I could see the lines from the board in our bedroom laid out in the dirt.
The concrete truck was already backing in off the street, beeping, with its drum turning.
My father stood in front of it in a hard hat stenciled MORELLI AND SANTANGELO, waving it back with his good hand.
He'd left his cane in the cab of Damiano's truck.
"Back," he shouted. "Back. Back. Left. Your other left. Who taught you to drive a truck?"
The driver leaned out his window. "Nobody, sir. Self-taught."
"It shows."
Damiano was standing by the long trench across the middle of the lot, in his hard hat, with his hands in his jacket pockets.
