Chapter 21: The Memorial
At eleven o'clock on the twenty-seventh of December, four families sat in folding chairs on Dock Six.
The sky was white, the channel was flat, and the wind carried the smell of diesel over the steel.
Four photographs stood on four easels in front of them.
Three hundred men in clean shirts stood behind the chairs, hard hats in their hands.
My mother sat in the front row with Ramón's photograph in her lap, and a lit candle in a glass at her feet.
Behind a rope at the edge of the dock stood the Chronicle reporter, with a notebook, and a camera on a tripod.
I stood on the platform beside Royce.
He was in a black suit, and he had no card.
Under the edge of the lectern, his fingers wove through mine, and his thumb moved once across the scar in my palm.
"Stay," he said, very low.
"I'm here."
Colt was the first speaker on the program.
He stepped up to the microphone in a navy suit, with a black armband, and bowed his head.
"Friends," he said. "A year ago tonight, four of our brothers did not come home."
