Chapter 24: Ninety
"Ninety," I said against his mouth, and I kicked the front door of the River Oaks house shut behind us.
I had stood at the gate of the federal camp at six that morning with my father's thermos in my hand.
I had counted ninety days on the calendar in his office, with a red marker, one square at a time.
He had come out through the gate in the clothes he went in with, thinner and sunburned.
He had not said a word.
He did not say one now.
He had me against the door with his hands in my hair.
He kissed me long and hard, with ninety nights in it.
I got his jacket off his shoulders.
He dragged my sweater over my head.
The little red padlock charm swung out and struck his chest, and he stopped and looked down at it.
"You wore it," he said.
"Every day. The key too."
"Mari."
"Carry me upstairs," I said.
He lifted me, and my legs locked around his waist.
He took the stairs one at a time, and this time he counted them out loud against my throat.
"One. Two. Three."
I bit his ear.
"Nine. Ten." His voice caught as I rocked against him. "Eleven. Mari, I'm going to drop you."
"Don't," I said.
"Seventeen. Eighteen."
He kicked open the bedroom door.
"Nineteen," he said, and he laid me down on the bed.
It was the same wide bed with the same iron rail.
He knelt over me with the lamp on and looked down for a long time, and I let him.
"Ninety days," he said. "I counted too."
"What did you count?"
"The ways I was going to do this."
I laughed, and it broke, and he kissed it.
He undressed me slowly, and he did not look at the clock.
He opened my jeans and drew them down my legs with my underwear.
He kissed every inch he uncovered.
He kissed my knee, and my thigh, and the scar on my hip where a mooring line once burned me.
He lowered his head between my legs, and I sighed.
There was no hurry in it.
He licked me in long, patient strokes.
The tip of his tongue circled my clit, and then the flat of it, wet and warm.
