Chapter 9: The Offer
On Monday evening, a note was waiting in my locker.
Colt Brockman, Second Floor, Six O'Clock. Come before your shift, friend.
It was written in blue ink on company paper, and it was signed with a smiley face.
I read it twice with my back to the room.
Then I took my phone out of my jacket, opened the voice recorder, and pushed it to the bottom of my breast pocket.
Colt's office was on the second floor of the tower, a big corner room with a mahogany desk.
A framed photograph of the Brockman who started the company hung behind it.
He was standing at the window with a glass of whiskey.
"Sit, Miss Lozano," he said. "Or should I say Miss Escobedo?"
I stayed on my feet.
My heart was going so hard that I thought it must show through my shirt.
"I don't know what that means," I said.
"Of course you do."
He smiled and turned from the glass.
"Your mother is Concepcion Escobedo, born Lozano. Cafeteria cook, Navigation Elementary. Widowed last December. Your father was a dock operator here for twenty-four years."
