Chapter 10: Cancelled

I slid my father's notebook along the shelf behind my back, and I felt Caleb's hand take it.

Warner's flashlight went from my face to Caleb's and back again.

"Your phone," he said to me. "I put a tracker on your phone the first week. Mother asked me to. It's a safety thing."

"You tracked me."

"You left a lake house in my mother's car at eleven at night." His voice was perfectly calm. "I thought you were hurt."

"I'm not hurt."

"No." His eyes went to my mouth, then to the front of Caleb's jacket, where my hands still were. "You look wonderful."

I took my hands off Caleb.

Caleb didn't move, and his shoulders filled the pantry door.

"Hurley," Warner said pleasantly. "You're trespassing on a Thayer property. The deed to this lot has my family's lien on it."

"It's a diner," Caleb said. "It's Donna Marrin's diner."

"It's collateral."

"Warner." I pushed between them. "Stop."

He looked at me, and the pleasant look slipped for a moment.

What was under it was small and hurt and a little frightened.

"I liked you," he said. "That's the stupid part. I liked you from the first cake."

"Then let us walk out."

"You can walk out," he said. "I'm not going to stop you."

He swallowed.

"But I'll tell you what Mother's going to do when she hears about this."

He didn't finish it.

He didn't have to.

We were out of the diner by one in the morning.

I drove Marguerite's car back to the lake house with Caleb's truck in my mirror for half the road.
