Chapter 21: The Ledger

The accountant walked to the microphone slowly, with his eyes on the floor.

Warner handed it to him and stepped back.

"I entered the Marrin note in the family loans ledger on a Tuesday," the accountant said. "It was eighteen days after Frank Marrin died."

Nobody moved.

"Mrs. Thayer told me to date it eleven days before his death. I did what I was told."

"That is a lie," Marguerite said.

"I've kept the original entry." He lifted the green ledger. "It's in my handwriting, in pencil, with the real date on the margin. I wrote it down so I'd remember."

"You are confused."

"I'm not, ma'am. I've never been less confused." He turned the page. "No money left Mr. Thayer's accounts for this loan. Not a dollar, not ever. I went through every account on Thursday night."

A murmur ran around the ballroom.

"Then why would anyone make it?" asked a man at table two.

The accountant turned another page.

"Eastgate Parcels, the company building the tower, holds options on the two lots beside Marrin's Diner. They end at the close of the year unless the diner lot comes with them."

He cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Thayer signed those options a month before the note was entered."

I was already walking.

I don't remember choosing to, but I was at the foot of the stage with my father's birthday card in my hand and the whole room watching.

"Mrs. Thayer," I said. "I have one question."

"Stevie, dear, this is not the place."

"Why block capitals?"

She looked down at me from the lectern with the mild gray eyes I had once thought were kind.
