Chapter 18: Aldo Makes His Move

Aldo stood in the kitchen with the dented tin in one fist and his other arm around his wife's shoulders.

Renata sat on the stool and stared at the floor.

Two of his men leaned against the fridge.

I came in behind Lucian, who walked the way he had walked for three months, slowly, with the cane tapping.

"Brother," Aldo said. "Good, you're up. I have terrible news."

"Tell me," Lucian said.

"My wife has been poisoning you."

He said it loudly, for the cook at the stove and the maid in the hall.

"I found this in her hands at five in the morning. She confessed to me just now."

"Aldo," Renata whispered.

"Hush, cara. She's not well, Lucian. She's been low for a year. Some women break."

I watched her lift her head.

"You said it was a tonic," she said. "In the winter. You said it would help him sleep."

"She's raving."

"You said think of the boy."

"Put her in the car," Aldo said to his men. His voice had not changed at all. "She needs a doctor. A private one, upstate, where she can rest."

Lucian said, "She stays in this house."

"She's my wife."

"She tried to kill your brother."

"And I'll answer for it, as her husband." Aldo spread his hand. "You wouldn't take a man's wife in front of his own people, Lucian. Not today. Not with the Commission watching how you rule."

It was a clever trap, and I saw Lucian see it.

If he stood up and ordered his men to stop Aldo, the old men would hear by noon that the dying Don had stood.

He leaned on the cane and said nothing.

Aldo smiled, and for one second I saw a man who had planned this for a year and was enjoying the last part.

"Give her something to drink first," he said to the cook. "She's shaking."
