Chapter 10: Jesse's Side

Jesse's POV

I could have lied.

She stood in her father's shop with the photograph in her hand, in my shirt, with her hair still wet, and I could have said it wasn't mine.

I didn't, because I had already lied to her for three months, and I was tired.

"I took it at Twin Lakes," I said. "I went up to fish on a Sunday and they were on the dock."

"In July."

"The fourteenth."

"And you printed it."

"I wanted something in my hand that said I wasn't crazy."

She didn't move.

I had seen her take a bar apart the night before without raising her voice, and the quiet scared me worse.

"You put it in a freezer bag," she said.

"It was the only bag I had."

"You carried it around in a toolbox for three months, and every day you looked at me across that building, and you let me keep building."

"Yes."

"Why?"

I had practiced the answer on every long drive for twelve weeks, and now it sounded like nothing.

"Because Hoyt gave you the build," I said. "He took it off me, three days after I priced it. He said a married woman building her husband's club was good for the family. I thought, if I walk up to her and say her husband's cheating, she'll think I want the job back."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Then that's not a reason."

"It's one of them."

"Say the rest."

I looked at the red sign hanging dark on the wall.
