Chapter 13: Gas Cans

I did not go out.

I put the deed back in the envelope, the envelope in the box, and I slid the box under the cot with my foot.

Then I took my phone off the bench and looked at the screen.

After the phone line was cut, I had hung one of the clubhouse cameras over the roll-up door, and it had been recording since Friday.

It was pointed straight at the drive, and the little red light was on.

I opened the side door two feet and stood in the gap.

"I'm listening from here, Hoyt."

"That's no way to talk to family."

"You can say it from there."

He smiled in the dark. He had a good smile, and I used to think it was kind.

"Your daddy kept some papers for me," he said. "Old club business. Boone says you went through his things this week. I'd like them back, honey, and then nobody gets upset."

"They're mine."

"They're the club's."

"Then you have a very odd way of asking," I said. "Why are those cans here?"

"Generator," said the man on the left, too fast.

Hoyt did not look at him.

Headlights swung across all of us as Jesse's truck stopped broadside across the drive, with the door open before the engine died.

He walked up between the gas cans and me, and he did not hurry.

His cut was on his back, and his hands were empty and hanging loose.

"Evening, Hoyt."

"Sergeant. You're out late."

"So are you. Put the cans in your bed."

"Mind your station."

"This is my station," Jesse said. "You made me sergeant-at-arms so I'd stand between this club and trouble. Right now trouble's you."
