Chapter 10: There Was No Man

Boone came at dusk, as he had promised.

He came in Birdie's old pickup, because he couldn't ride with a broken collarbone, and he left it running at the gate.

I watched him from the window with Faye beside me.

"You don't have to open that door, Mom."

"I know."

"The doctor said no stress."

"I know that too."

I opened it anyway and stepped out onto the porch, and I pulled the door shut behind me.

He stood at the bottom of the steps with his arm in the sling and his hat in his good hand.

The porch light turned his beard silver.

"I won't come in," he said. "I'll talk from down here."

"Then talk."

"Can I sit?"

I pointed at the bottom step.

He lowered himself onto it with a grunt and rested his elbow on his knee.

I took the porch swing, six feet above and behind him, where I could see the back of his head.

For a long minute he said nothing.

"Twenty-three years ago, a month before our wedding, Rusty told me something," he said.

My hand tightened on the chain.

"He said he saw you at a motel off Route 66. He said you got into a man's truck."

I didn't breathe.

"I never asked who the man was. I never asked if it was true."

"Boone."

"I didn't want to hear the answer."

"You married me anyway."

"I loved you. I figured I'd put it behind me."

"And then Faye was born."

"And every time I looked at her, I heard him say it."
