Rusty's photo of my house was still on my phone four days later.
Boone had read his message once, then parked across the end of my drive and stayed there.
Birdie sent two men every night to sit on my roof with a thermos and a shotgun.
I was still on the couch, and Boone was still at my gate.
The doctor had said two weeks off my feet, and I was obeying her out of pure fear.
Faye brought him a plate every morning and a thermos every night.
I pretended not to see her carry them down the drive.
On Thursday I made her sit down.
"I want to say my terms out loud," I said. "And I want you to hear them first."
"Okay, Mom."
"He doesn't come inside this house. He doesn't touch me. Nothing he does buys him a yes."
"And?"
"And if I say no, he takes it, every time, and he doesn't sulk."
Faye nodded slowly.
"What about me?"
"You can forgive him on your own schedule. You never needed my permission."
She looked at her hands.
"I already did, a little," she said. "It scares me."
"It should scare you. It scares me too."
She went down the drive with a sandwich.
I watched through the window as Boone stood to take it, and as she said something I couldn't hear.
He went very still.
Then he said something back, and Faye did what she hadn't done in twenty-two years.
She put her hand on his sleeve.
When she came back in, her eyes were wet.
"He asked if he could hear me say it," she said. "So I said it."
"Said what?"
"Dad."
My throat closed.
"Okay," I said. "Okay."
