Chapter 12: Locker Room

"When?" I said.

"Tomorrow." Beau unlaced his skates on the bench. "The team's getting fitted for the Cup rings at ten. A jeweler in the Pearl. Every player will be there."

"You're suspended."

"I'm suspended from coaching. Nobody said anything about jewelry."

"Then I'm driving you."

He looked up.

"Brecken."

"Your knee's the size of a grapefruit. You skated a lap on it. I'm driving."

He opened his mouth to argue.

Then he closed it and handed me his truck keys.

The jeweler's showroom took up the ground floor of an old brick warehouse, with tall glass windows looking onto the street.

I parked across the road at nine-fifty.

Through the glass, I could see the whole team in shorts and team polos, crowded around a long velvet counter.

A photographer was setting up lights.

Dane was in the middle of it, of course.

He had a jeweler measuring his ring finger and Skye at his elbow, filming him for her story.

Beau sat in the passenger seat and watched him for a full minute.

"You don't have to do this," I said.

"Yeah," he said. "I do."

He got out.

I got out too.

He didn't tell me to wait in the truck. I think he knew I wouldn't.

The bell over the showroom door jingled.

Twenty-some players turned around.

A couple of the young guys said "Coach!" and grinned, and one of the veterans came over and shook his hand and told him the suspension was garbage.

Beau thanked him.

Then he walked to the velvet counter.

Dane saw him coming and put on his camera smile.

"Coach! Didn't know you were invited." His eyes slid to me and turned cold. "Didn't know she was either."

"I won't stay long," Beau said.

"You want a ring? I'll put in a word. Maybe they'll give you a little one."
