Chapter 15: Edited
Skye saw me see it.
She didn't hurry.
She reached into the tote, tapped the screen, and the red dot went out.
"Oops," she said.
Then she walked out through the front doors and climbed into a white SUV that had been idling across the lot the whole time.
Beau came limping up beside me.
"Was that what I think it was?"
"She got all of it," I said. "Nearly seven minutes of footage."
"Then she got herself too. The knee. The impression."
"Beau," I said. "She's not going to post that part."
She posted the rest at nine the next morning.
A forty-second clip, cut into five pieces, with soft piano music under it.
My face, close and angry over the napkin dispenser.
"What do you want?" Skye's voice, gentle.
Cut.
"A hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
Cut.
"I dated him for five years."
The caption said: I went to her rink to make peace and offer help for the kids. She asked me for $180K and threatened to leak private "tapes" of Dane. I'm shaking. Please be kind to each other.
Her impression of Dane was gone.
The envelope was gone.
The girl in the pink helmet calling the shirt dirty was gone.
By noon, the clip had three million views.
Extortion was trending in Portland.
By two, the credit union called.
They'd paid for the logo on the Zamboni for eleven years.
"We're stepping back for now," the woman on the phone said. "Until things settle. I'm so sorry, Greer. It isn't personal."
"It's a Zamboni," I said. "It's a little personal."
