Chapter 24: The Offer
"Greer Brecken?"
"Yes."
"I read all twelve on the train," the editor said. "I missed my stop. I'm standing in Brooklyn in the wrong neighborhood, and I don't care."
I put my hand over my mouth.
Beau sat up straight in his orange chair.
"You remember me?" the editor said.
"You lost the auction for Clean Ice."
"I lost it by forty thousand dollars, and I've been grateful for two years. I read his proposal. It was the most boring good man I'd ever met." She laughed. "Then I read your letter tonight and thought, oh. That's because he isn't one."
"No," I said. "He isn't."
"Is the tape real?"
"It's real. It's in a court file. His own lawyers asked for it."
"And the coach. The one with the puddle and chapter seven. He's okay with being in it?"
I looked at Beau.
He'd heard every word. Her voice carried.
He nodded once.
"He's sitting next to me," I said. "He says yes."
"Hi, Coach," the editor said.
