Chapter 27: Powell's

"Hang up," Beau said.

I hung up.

He sat forward in his chair and looked at the printed pages on the table.

"He's scared," he said.

"He's got security with my picture."

"Then don't look like her." Beau tapped the pages. "Wear something she wouldn't wear."

In the end, it was Peg's idea.

"I'm going in a wheelchair," she said at breakfast.

"You refused a wheelchair at the hospital."

"That was pride. This is strategy." She buttered her toast. "Nobody looks at the girl pushing the old lady."

So at six-forty on Thursday night, I pushed my grandmother through the doors of Powell's City of Books.

I wore her old straw church hat and a thrift-store dress.

No ponytail. No fleece. No lanyard.

Peg wore her nice navy cardigan and an expression of deep frailty she'd practiced in the mirror.

Two security guards stood at the door of the event room with a clipboard.

One of them had a printout taped to it.

It was my staff ID photo.

"Ticket, ma'am?"

Peg held up her ticket with a trembling hand.
