Chapter 16: Top
"On your back," Linus said. "And leave the door open."
"It's Tuesday afternoon," Leandros said.
"Manolis took Quincy to the grocery store. Nobody's coming home for an hour."
"Linus..." Leandros said.
"On your back."
Linus stood at the foot of the bed in his shorts, with the afternoon sun lying across the white sheets.
The bedroom door stood wide open on the hall, and for the first time since Saturday the penthouse felt like a house.
Leandros was in his shirtsleeves, with his beads loose in one hand.
He looked at the bed, and at Linus, and set the beads down on the night table.
"You're sure."
"I've never been surer of anything," Linus said.
"I've never done this."
"I know."
"Not once, with anyone," Leandros said.
"I know that too." Linus came around the bed and put a hand on his chest. "Your whole life you've held the rope. I want you to let go of it for an hour."
Leandros's throat moved.
"If I tell you to stop..."
"I'll stop," Linus said.
"If I tell you..."
"Leandros. I'll stop. Lie down."
He lay down.
He did it slowly, and put his head on the pillow.
Linus knelt on the mattress and unbuttoned his shirt.
He kissed every inch of the chest he uncovered, slowly, over the old pale scar below the ribs and the plane of the stomach.
He undid the trousers and drew them off.
When Leandros lay naked on the white sheet, long and hard and watchful, Linus sat back on his heels and looked at him.
