Chapter 20: Front Row
The chair in the front row of the Fells Point club was a red folding chair, and Leandros Kallis had carried it in himself.
He had refused the booth.
He had refused the table by the bar, and the velvet rope, and the offer of a stool.
He sat in the middle of the front row, three feet from the stage, in a dark coat, with his knees apart and his hands loose.
Nobody within ten feet of him dared to stand up.
Linus saw him from the wings and almost forgot his first line.
It was a Thursday in February, and the club held two hundred.
It was sold out.
The single had come out in January under his own name, and it had reached number nine in a month.
It was called "Beads".
Nobody knew what it was about, and everybody had an opinion.
"You have seven minutes," Quincy said, behind him, adjusting his collar. "You look incredible. Try not to throw up."
"I won't."
"You will. I'm going to sit next to your boyfriend and guard him," Quincy said.
"Guard him from what?"
"Women." Quincy squinted through his new glasses at the crowd. "There are a lot of them, and they're all looking at him."
