Chapter 24: Every Thought
The dress was Grandma's.
She had kept it in a trunk under her bed for fifty-eight years, through every move and every humiliation, and Beatrice's movers had brought the trunk out of the Maddox house with the rest of her things.
It was ivory silk with long sleeves and forty tiny buttons down the back.
Beatrice's seamstress took it in at the waist, and not an inch more.
"It's the first time anyone's worn it since me," Grandma said, as the buttons went up. "I wanted it to go to someone who deserved it."
"Grandma."
"Hush. Your hair's coming down."
The chapel was the one from the wedding, with the same white flowers and the same pews.
This time there were thirty people in it, and I knew every one of them.
Beatrice in the front row, in lilac, with a handkerchief already in her fist.
Kent beside her, in a clean suit, trying hard not to cry.
The old director, with white eyebrows and a cane, who had come in his best overcoat and sat with the housekeeper and the day nurse on one side of him.
"Rhett pleaded guilty on Wednesday," he had told me at the door, as he kissed my cheek. "Twenty-five years. I thought you should hear it from me."
Behind them sat the doctor, the cook, and the guard who had stood under Grandma's window all night.
There wasn't one Maddox in the room.
I stood at the back of the chapel with my bouquet, and the doors were closed in front of me.
"Who gives this bride?" the minister's voice asked from inside.
The doors opened.
