Chapter 8: The Seafood Tower
Sabine Thorsby invited me to dinner at the best steakhouse in Denver, and I brought Tiernan.
"I'm her ride," he told the host.
"I'm his date," I said.
"I'm not your date."
"You're in a jacket."
Sabine was already at a corner table, in a charcoal suit, with a glass of red wine in front of her.
She stood and shook my hand with a dry, cool grip.
"Gwendolyn. I'm so glad. Your sister was always very hard to reach."
"She's hard to reach this week," I said.
Tiernan sat on my left.
A waiter appeared with menus.
Sabine ordered without opening hers.
"The ribeye, medium rare, with the bone marrow. And a bottle of the Barolo."
"The ribeye," I said, "medium rare, with the bone marrow. And a bottle of the Barolo."
The waiter looked at Sabine.
Sabine smiled.
"The same, for two," she said, and added: "And the seafood tower."
"The seafood tower," I said.
"A hundred and ninety dollars," said the waiter, politely.
"I know what it costs," I said. "That's why I'm having it."
Tiernan put his face in his hand.
The wine came, and the tower, and two ribeyes that took up most of the table.
Sabine lifted her glass, and I lifted mine.
She put it down, and I put mine down.
She dabbed her mouth with her napkin, and I dabbed mine.
By the time the bone marrow came, she had stopped looking at me directly.
"Gwendolyn," she said, "I'd like to be candid."
"Please be candid," I said, in the voice I had found on Tuesday.
"The board will vote on Friday. I'd rather not see this company dragged through a vote."
"Neither would I."
"So I'll make you the same offer I made your sister, and I'll make it better." She folded her hands. "We offered Cordelia ninety million dollars for Larch Creek and the firm. For you, I'll go to one hundred and eighty."
