Chapter 11: Twelve Degrees
On the twenty-ninth night it snowed, and I took my cocoa out onto the back porch to look at it.
The porch was the old kind, gray planks and a rail, with a metal chair.
It had a view over the alley and the garages and the line of Midway's runway lights beyond.
Snow came down slowly in the yellow light.
I had my uniform coat on over my pajamas, and I was thinking about tomorrow, and not drinking the cocoa.
The back door opened behind me.
"You'll freeze," Cas said.
"I'm from Back of the Yards. I invented freezing."
He came and stood at the rail beside me with his hands in his coat pockets.
We watched the snow for a minute.
"Saturday," he said.
"I know what day it is," I said.
"Lenny is going to be at that table."
"I know that too."
"I'm going to say a thing in front of him, and in front of Wanda, and in front of the whole family," Cas said.
"And I want to say another thing first, here, where it's quiet."
He took his right hand out of his pocket.
In it was the notice.
It was folded in quarters and gone soft along the creases from a week in his pocket.
He held it out between us.
"I kept this," he said. "Not to hold over you. Because it was the only reason you came down the stairs."
"Cas," I said.
"I told Lenny thirty days so he'd go home. I told him what he wanted to hear. I was never going to put you out."
"I was going to ask you on day thirty, in this exact spot, to stay."
