Chapter 18: Five Days

I wrote the notice on the back of a bus transfer pad, in block capitals, in Cas's square print.

It took me nine tries to get the letters right.

At twenty to six on Friday morning I came down the back stairs.

I had the pad in one hand and a roll of blue painter's tape in the other.

Through the kitchen door I could hear the three of them at breakfast, as I had every Friday for four years.

Rudy was telling a story about a customer and a goat.

I stood in the back hall in my uniform with the stick in my coat pocket, wrapped in a tissue.

I had carried the last test around for two days.

I had wanted to say it right.

I tore the page off, held it against the kitchen door at eye height, and taped all four corners flat.

It read:

NOTICE TO FIRST-FLOOR TENANTS.

YOU HAVE FIVE DAYS TO CLEAR THE BACK BEDROOM.

REASON: A NURSERY. SIGNED, R. SOLIS.

Then I pushed the door open without knocking, as I had the first time.
