Chapter 13: The Empty Vault
Shen Ke woke at six with a phone ringing in his ear and a warm weight across his chest that was Hanzhou's arm.
By the time Shen Ke sat up Hanzhou was dressed, upright, and cold, standing at the narrow door with the telephone to his head.
"I'm coming," he said. "Do not touch anything. Do not call anyone else."
He hung up and turned.
His eyes went over Shen Ke on the narrow bed, and stopped for a moment on the bare shoulder.
"Term two," he said. "I notice that we have retired it."
"I've revised the terms," said Shen Ke, finding his trousers. "Put your collar down. You look hurried."
"I am an heir who has lost a vault."
Hanzhou crossed the room and kissed him once, hard, on the mouth, and went out to the car.
Shen Ke sat on the bed for a moment with his hand against his lips.
Then he pulled on his tunic and ran after him.
The family lawyer's firm occupied the second floor of an old brick building near the silk museum.
The vault was a steel room in the basement, and its door stood open.
The old lawyer sat on a chair in the corridor with his briefcase on his knees, as grey as the walls.
