Chapter 19: The Last Vigil
The last vigil bell rang at midnight on the forty-eighth night, and the house went to bed.
The clan filed out, and the maids snuffed the corridor lamps.
The rain that had fallen all week stopped for the first time.
Only two people kept the lamp in the mourning hall.
Shen Ke knelt at the left of the urn, and Hanzhou knelt at the right.
Between them the old tablet gleamed in the candlelight.
"Nobody speaks until the lamp," said Shen Ke, softly. "That's the rule for the last night."
"Is it a rule, or are you tired of me talking?"
"Both."
For the first time in forty-eight days the corner of Hanzhou's mouth moved without his permission.
At one in the morning, a tread sounded on the gravel.
It was the tread of several men, quiet and in step.
Shen Ke rose to his feet and stood in the middle of the doorway.
Four of the Second Uncle's men came across the courtyard in dark coats.
With them walked a bent old elder in a long gown, one of the three who had voted against Hanzhou.
The elder carried a folded paper, and one of the men carried a lacquered carrying box.
"Mourner Shen," said the elder, in a papery voice. "The tablet goes to the temple for purification, by order of this clan."
