Chapter 21: The Thanksgiving Banquet
By midday Gu Hanzhou had slept three hours, and he woke in the hotel room Qin Wanyi had booked for the heir to dress in, with the sun on his face.
He lay still and took inventory.
His eyes were swollen and his chest felt scoured and his head was entirely clear.
His father had said that he would be angry for a week and lighter after.
He was neither angry nor heavy.
He felt, to his considerable surprise, rested.
The door opened, and Shen Ke came in with a grey box under one arm, still in the black tunic, with the cold of the lane on him.
"The amplifier," he said, setting it on the table. "It still works. The old master asked if it was a funeral, and I said yes, and he said then take the good cables."
"You went to Lamp Lane."
"I told you I would." Shen Ke looked at him. "You're awake."
"I am extremely awake."
"You look different."
"I am told that is the plan," said Hanzhou.
He sat up against the headboard and held out his hand.
Shen Ke took it, and let himself be drawn onto the bed, and then across Hanzhou's lap, facing him, with a knee on either side.
The curtains were open, and the lake shone beyond the glass, and it was the first time they had been together in full daylight.
"The hall is closed to us," said Shen Ke. "We have until the evening to think of something."
"I have thought of something. It will take an hour."
"That sounds like docking."
"It is the opposite," said Hanzhou. "I intend to give you a great deal more than I was paid for."
He laughed, as he said it, quietly, and the sound surprised both of them.
Shen Ke put his hands on either side of his face and looked at it.
"You laugh now," he said. "It's very distracting."
"Then be distracted."
He kissed him, and the kiss was not clumsy and not careful, only warm, and in no hurry at all.
Shen Ke's tunic came off over his head.
