Chapter 16: The Claw

Dacre's POV

I had planned this moment for nine years.

In my plans the man was always standing.

He knelt on the sand in front of me instead, with a broken wrist, a ruined leg and blood running into his collar.

He looked up at me with an old man's flat boredom.

The Court of Packs had formed a ring.

I walked into the moot ring across the line of light that Cassia had woken, and the sand held under my boots.

The old woman with the staff stood at the north stone.

"The King of the Lycans holds the blood-right for the House of Vaughn," she said. "The Court has heard the Marshal speak true. It is the King's to name the sentence."

I looked at Ansgar Eckert.

"Do you know what I wanted to do to you?" I asked.

"I imagine it was dramatic."

"I wanted to find you in a corridor at night," I said. "I wanted you afraid for a week."

"And now?"

"Now I find I don't care to see you afraid."

He gave a small, dry laugh.

"You are your brother's brother. He was a sentimental man."

"He was," I agreed. "He went to a table with no weapon, to give a stranger a valley for nothing."

I took off my coat.

It is a form of respect among my people, to meet the end of a trial in your shirt.
