Chapter 21: The Choosing

Dacre's POV

The Lycan rite of choosing has three sentences.

Each is said once, and each must be true.

A Lycan cannot say a false word in the rite without the words turning in his mouth.

I had known them since I was a boy.

I had never expected to need them.

I stood alone on the terrace at Lowwater at dusk, in front of the cairn, with the valley going blue behind me.

I tried the second one out loud.

"I hold nothing against you."

I heard it leave my mouth.

It did not turn.

It came out plain and level, and it hung in the air, and nothing happened.

I stood very still.

I had been braced for the catch, the small hard stone in the throat that tells a Lycan he is lying.

It never came.

Somewhere between the ring and the hall, between the old woman's slap at the cairn and the vote, I had stopped holding it.

I could not have said when.

It had gone out of me while I was busy hating the wrong things.

Behind me, a pair of boots crunched on gravel.

"You're talking to a pile of rocks," Cassia said.

I turned.

She stood twenty feet off with her hands in her jacket and her braid coming loose.

She looked tired, and she was the most welcome sight I had ever seen.

"I was practicing," I said.

"For what?" she asked.

"For something I haven't earned the right to ask."
