Chapter 12: Who Was Driving

Shelby sat on an overturned bucket by the camp stove with a blanket around her shoulders.

Magnus had handed it to her without a word, and she hadn't looked at him.

I stood across from her with my arms crossed.

"Say it again," I said.

"Trevor was driving."

The lake slapped the pilings under the pier.

I had known it since the foreman spoke.

Hearing it said out loud was something else.

"Say all of it," I said.

"It was his stepfather's truck." Shelby's teeth were chattering. "We were at a party on the hill. Trevor had been drinking since four. I begged him to let me drive, and he said I couldn't handle a manual."

"And?"

"He took the curve too fast." She touched her jaw. "I remember the guardrail coming at us. I remember the glass."

"Where was Magnus?"

"Not there." She looked up for the first time, and her eyes went to him and away. "He was never in that truck. He was at this yard. Mr. Ekdahl called from the hospital, and Trevor told him it was Magnus, and Mr. Ekdahl, he." She swallowed. "He said it to the police the next day. He just said it."

"He asked Magnus to say it was him," I said.

"Yes."

"And you went along."

"I was twenty-one, and I was in a bed with my face stitched, and Trevor told me if I said anything he'd lose the transfer and his mother would lose her mind." Her voice broke. "He told me Magnus would be fine. He told me it was only a few months."

"Eleven months," Magnus said, from behind me.

Shelby flinched.

"I know," she said. "I counted."
