Chapter 19: The Note
The bank on Superior Street closed at five, and we got there at four.
The manager came out from behind her glass wall herself.
She had been kind to me on the phone in September and she was kind now, which was worse.
"Mr. Lindahl hasn't made contact," she said. "Not a call, not a payment. If the note isn't settled by close, it goes to collections in both names. Ms. Nygren, I'd hate for that to land on your credit."
"It won't," Magnus said.
He put a cashier's check on her desk.
I looked at the amount.
It was fifty-eight thousand four hundred dollars and some cents, made out to the bank.
"Magnus."
"I've had it since Tuesday."
"I told you to wait until I gave you the number."
"You gave me the number in the parking lot." He didn't look away from the manager. "It was a lot of boat."
"I'm not letting you pay my debt."
"It's not your debt. It's his." He turned to me. "It's your name on it, and I'm taking your name off. The bank sells me the note, and I own it, and you're released. That's all this is."
"And then Trevor owes you."
"Yes."
I thought about that.
Trevor owing Magnus Ekdahl fifty-eight thousand dollars was exactly the kind of thing I would have invented for him in the dark.
It still made me stubborn.
"I'll pay you back," I said. "Out of my paycheck. Four hundred a month."
"No."
"Yes."
"Linnea, we agreed I'd cover the cosign as the price of the dinners."
"I haven't done the dinners," I said. "I've done one with Greta, and it was a hostage situation."
The manager looked at the ceiling with great care.
