Chapter 12: First Cut
For one second I just looked at him.
The man who didn't pick up.
The monitor over his head showed a pressure of sixty over thirty and falling.
"Dr. Ashworth?"
"I heard you."
I held out my hands and a nurse snapped gloves onto them.
"Ultrasound," I said.
The probe showed it right away. A dark ring of blood around his heart, squeezing it.
The same thing I'd seen on the floor by the elevators on my first day back.
Only worse. Something inside was torn.
"He won't make it upstairs," I said. "We open him here."
The resident's eyes went wide.
"Here? In the bay?"
"Scalpel."
It was in my palm before I finished the word.
I cut along his ribs on the left side.
I'd done this a hundred times in residency.
I had never done it to someone I used to sleep beside.
My hands didn't care.
They knew the way.
Rib spreader. Crank. The heart came into view, purple and struggling under its tight wet sac.
I opened the sac.
Blood poured out onto the floor.
The heart jumped, free, and started beating harder.
