Chapter 31: Both of Them
My knees went soft.
I caught the edge of my desk and sat on it before they could give.
Ethan crouched in front of me and took both my hands.
Neither of us said anything for a long time.
Then I said, "Who's cutting?"
He blinked.
"You get to pick," he said. "You're the patient."
"Then I want your deputy. The one with the ugly clogs. She doesn't talk while she sews."
"She'll be thrilled."
"And you're not scrubbing in."
"I know."
"Not even to hold a retractor."
"I know, Natalie. I'll be in the gallery."
On Thursday I was awake at four.
So was he.
At five I walked to pre-op on my own feet in a hospital gown and the fuzzy socks with pink cats on them.
The nurse had a wheelchair waiting.
I walked past it.
My last dialysis had been the afternoon before. The catheter was still taped under my collarbone, just in case.
The deputy came into my bay at 5:40 in her ugly clogs.
She went through the plan with me once, fast.
I asked her two questions. She had good answers to both.
"You're a terrible patient," she said.
"I know."
At 6:12 Ethan's phone buzzed.
He read it and turned it so I could see.
A text from the coordinator on the West Side.
Donor in OR. Incision 6:10.
