Chapter 17: The Dunmere Gate
We rode three days with no wagons and no sleep, and came over the last ridge at noon.
Dunmere's gate was shut.
On the hills beyond it, eight hundred riders in black and silver stood in ranks under a white truce banner.
Torin reined in beside me.
"I count more than Ronan did."
"He counted the wagons," I said. "Not the Redmere riders they borrowed."
Ronan, on the borrowed grey, said nothing at all.
My father's steward met us inside the gate with a face the color of paper.
"The warden is dead, Miss Bronwyn. Riders in grey cloaks took him in the dark, and an arrow went into your father's shoulder. He's raving with the silver."
"Is the arrow out?"
"It's out. The healer says the wound hasn't closed."
I went up the stairs two at a time.
My father lay in the big bed with his beard gone dull, and a sheet pulled to his chin.
His eyes found me and cleared.
"Bronwyn."
"I'm here."
"Highgate wants the road." His voice was a rasp. "Their heir sits out there under a white flag and says it's for our protection."
"I know."
"I'd rather lose the arm than lose the road."
"You won't lose either."
He caught my wrist with his good hand.
"Ronan was the plan," he said. "I was wrong. You picked a better one. Don't tell your mother I said it."
My mother had been dead eleven years.
I kissed his forehead and took the Dunmere gate horn off the peg by the bed, and he let me.
I walked out onto the gate wall with Torin on my left and Ronan on my right.
