Chapter 24: Nobody Was Late
Two years later, on the morning I was meant to die, I woke with Torin's arm across me and a wooden horse under my cheek.
The sun was up.
The window was open, and the air smelled of cut barley.
I lay still and listened to my own heart.
It was loud, and steady, and it did not skip.
"You're awake," Torin said into my hair.
"I'm checking."
"And?"
"Still here."
He tightened his arm.
He did not say it was only a date.
He got up and dressed in silence, and I watched the old scar flex across his back.
He turned and caught me looking.
"Don't," he said. "I'm already worried about you."
"I'm fine."
"You were sick in the washbasin this morning."
"That isn't the date," I said. "That's your child."
He stopped with one arm in his sleeve.
I had meant to tell him later, somewhere better.
His face changed, and went through four things, and settled on one.
He crossed the room in two strides and knelt, and put his forehead against my stomach.
I put my hand on his head.
We stayed like that until Hester banged on the door and shouted that the horses were saddled and the loaf would not carry itself.
We rode south for three days with the harvest cart behind us.
There was no hurry in it.
Coldwater's barley stood gold in every field we passed, the first full harvest in thirty years, and children ran along the road to wave at the Alpha's wife.
