Chapter 9: The Letters
I folded the paper in half and stood up so he wouldn't be looking down at me.
"The boat came three times," I said. "October, with us. November. December."
"I paid for every month."
"I believe you."
He blinked.
"I believe you paid," I said. "I'm telling you what came. Tilly cried over the oranges."
His jaw moved.
"After that, nothing. Not in January. Not in February. Not ever again."
"The invoices came every month. The captain cashed every check."
"Then somebody paid her more not to come."
"That's insane."
"She's in your lake, Bradley."
He flinched.
People on the benches were pretending not to listen. Nobody was pretending very hard.
"There was a note," he said. "On the table at the camp. And a text. You said you didn't feed her. You said you couldn't do it anymore."
"I know what it said."
"So which is it? Did you write it or not?"
"Look at it."
He stared at me.
"You have a picture of it on your phone. Take it out and look at it."
He didn't move.
"Do you remember our letters?" I said. "From when you were in Atlanta?"
Something went across his face.
"A hundred and twelve of them," I said. "You used to read them out loud to your roommates to show off. You said you knew every curve of my writing. You said you could forge my name better than I could."
I held his eyes.
"So look at the note. Look at the way it makes a y. Look at the T in Tilly."
His hand went to his pocket.
He took out his phone.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
For one second I thought he was going to do it.
