Chapter 7: Nothing Remembered

They pulled the tube out of my throat while four people shouted my name.

I coughed until my eyes ran.

Keegan held my hand in both of his and said, "Honey, you're all right. You're all right," over and over, in the voice he uses on clients whose claim has been denied.

Linus stood against the bed rail and wouldn't let go of my fingers.

Imogen cried quietly into a tissue by the window.

A doctor shined a light in my eyes and asked, "Mrs. Winslow, do you know where you are?"

"Hospital," I croaked.

"Do you remember what happened to you?"

I looked past him at Keegan.

He was holding his breath.

Beside him, Imogen had stopped dabbing her eyes.

I had been dead for nine days, and I had watched my husband sign a clipboard.

I had no strength to stand, no proof, and no one in the room who would believe me over her.

So I told them I remembered nothing.

"I lay down in a box," I whispered. "Then the lights went out."

Keegan's shoulders dropped an inch.

"It was a tragic mistake, honey," he said. "A stagehand mixed up the blades. The police are looking for him."

"A boy," Imogen added, quivering. "Barely twenty. I'll never forgive myself for trusting him."

"I don't remember any of it," I said again.

Imogen closed her eyes, and I watched her breathe out.

The next morning, my son's drawing was taped to my wall.

He had drawn a stage with a brown box and a long red line on the floor.
