I Died When the Sky Fell, Now I Wake Up Holding Lightning novel · Chapter 13 of 24

Chapter 13: Last Time

Nobody slept again.

We sat in the shop with one battery lantern between us and the sky flickering in the high window.

I had not planned to say it.

But Emmett had asked what "last time" meant for the third time, and Abel was still holding a rag to his nose.

"I died," I said.

The shop went quiet.

"On the third night of the Fall, on the county channel," I said. "I was a dispatcher then too. The Center was overrun, and I was still reading out shelter addresses when the doors came in."

"The Fall," Abel said slowly.

"The sky rings, the grid dies, the storms start. It happened on the eighth. I was on the air for three nights of it."

"And then you woke up on the twenty-sixth," said Ward.

"With this."

I held up my hand, and a thread of blue ran across the knuckles and went out.

Emmett shook his head.

"Was I in it?" he said. "Was I alive?"

"I don't know," I said. "I only knew the voices that called in. I never heard yours."

"That's the worst answer you could have given me."

"I'm sorry."

"No, it's fine. It's great. I'll just sit here and wonder."

Ward had not taken his eyes off Hollis.

"And you," Ward said. "You remember it too."

"Yes," said Hollis.

"Since when?"

"Since the morning of the twenty-sixth. Same as her."

"That's why the water," said Abel. "The flashlight."

"Yes."

"And the roster. And the almonds."

"Yes."

Emmett rubbed his face with both bandaged hands.
