Chapter 10: The Bridge
We spent the afternoon on the Folly Beach pier in a cold March wind, eating fried oysters out of paper boats.
Rhett and Boone walked a foot apart, and I walked in the gap between them.
Nobody said much, but twice I caught them looking at the same pelican and both of them almost smiled.
By dark my fingers were numb, and Rhett put his flannel jacket around my shoulders without asking.
It came down past my knees.
Boone drove home.
I sat in the back of Rhett's crew cab, and Rhett sat next to me, and the dome light went off.
Folly Road was dark and wet, and a long string of headlights ran toward town.
Rhett's knee pressed against mine.
I put my hand on his thigh and left it there.
He did not move.
"Boone," I said. "Eyes on the road."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Rhett. Eyes on me."
I slid my hand up and found the button of his jeans.
He went rigid.
"Doc," he said, low. "He can see us."
"There's a mirror," I said.
"I know there's a mirror."
"Then be quiet."
I opened his jeans and drew down the zipper, slowly, and the sound was loud in the cab.
He was already hard.
