Chapter 14: Boone's POV

Boone's POV

Rhett crossed Tavi's kitchen and put his hand on the back of my neck.

I did not move.

When we were boys he used to pull my head down that way, and I always went.

I went now.

He drew me down until his forehead rested against mine, and his hand was hot and heavy and shaking a little.

It was the first time he had touched me in four and a half months.

"I'm so mad at you I can't see straight," he said, low.

"Yes," I said.

"Tomorrow I'll be mad. Tonight I'm not letting go."

"Rhett. It was me."

"I heard you the first time." His thumb moved once on my neck. "I heard every word, Boone."

I shut my eyes.

I had sat in a parking lot in Savannah for four days because I knew that if I walked into his room he would look at me and I would say it.

I had been right about that part.

"Rule two," Tavi said behind him.

Her voice was thick and unsteady, and I knew she was crying.

Rhett did not let go of me.

"Your rule, ma'am," I said.

She made a wet sound that was half a laugh.

"I'm taking it back," she said. "Both of you. Bed."

She did not make us walk in front.
