Chapter 21: The Blessing
The Blessing of the Fleet started at noon, with the priest in white on the pier and forty boats in line under the Ravenel Bridge.
Every boat was dressed in flags, and the water was bright, and the whole waterfront smelled of fried shrimp and diesel.
I stood at the rail of the pier in a green dress with my hair freshly twisted, and I did not look at the podium.
Rhett and Boone were out in the channel on Miss Lorraine, last in line, because Rhett had said the boat would not be missed.
The wreath sat on a stand beside the priest, for the men the creek had lost.
Garland Toomer stood at the microphone in a navy blazer and read the order of boats.
He read them one at a time, with their captains' names, as each came past the pier and the priest raised his hand.

The crowd clapped for each, and the horns answered.
Toomer got to the end of the list, and Miss Lorraine slid into the gap, and he did not say her name.
