Chapter 7: Octavia's POV
Octavia's POV
Rhett stopped walking so fast that I almost ran into his back.
I looked past his arm at the Ranger under the live oak.
Boone sat behind the wheel with both hands on it, looking straight ahead through the windshield.
"Boone," Rhett said, hoarse.
"Evening," Boone said.
"I told you I was going to the boat."
"You did."
Rhett's shoulders came up.
I put my hand flat between his shoulder blades and felt him shake.
"Go home, Rhett," I said.
"Doc."
"Go on. Get in your truck. I'll talk to him."
He looked at me over his shoulder, and I saw how scared he was.
I had seen that same face on my table in November, when he tried his first single-leg squat.
"It's all right," I said.
He went up the street, limping a little, and I heard his truck door shut two streets over.
I crossed the dark grass in my bare feet and opened the passenger door of the Ranger and got in.
